make comparisons by adding "er" or "ier" to an adjective or using the words "more", "less", "better" and "worse"
adjective + er
- high -> higher
- low -> lower
-> The cost of living is much higher in Japan.
adjective + ier : y -> ier
- easy -> easier
- funny -> funnier
- messy -> messier
- tidy -> tidier
-> This is easier than I thought!
-> He's funnier than my last boyfriend!
more, less : talking about how much something costs
-> You would pay 40 - 50% more in Tokyo.
-> It would cost less in the suburbs.
more, less + long adjective
-> Food in Japan is more expensive than in the States.
better : superior
worse : inferior, not as good
-> The public transport is better in the cities than in the countryside.
-> The weather is worse in the mountains than at the coast.
